Breeder Profile — Sheila Woolf
After very carefully researching the livestock industries of the day, Rathdowney Alpacas was established in 1994. In order to choose stock that would be compatible with myself and my 15 acre property at Rylstone, situated high in the Great Dividing Range in New South Wales, I began the daunting task of purchasing my first two Chilean pregnant mums.

Being a single farmer and having long passed the half century milestone, I was mindful of selecting an animal that I could readily and easily manage myself. It was indeed an excellent and wise decision to choose the alpaca, as in the ensuing years, they have met my expectations time and time again, sprinkled, of course, with the inevitable occasions when all does not go to plan!
After selling the Rylstone property, I moved to a heritage-listed property in the Goulburn area, living on site, in a delightful 1810 stone cottage, whilst employed as the Caretaker/Overseer/Head Gardener. During this time, I was able to continue with my alpaca interests, and became actively involved with the AAA Southern Region NSW, enjoying the great camaraderie and the benefits of networking at functions and events.
At the close of 2003, in order to be closer to family and relatives, I made the decision to return “home”, having been absent from Queensland for some 13 years. The alpacas and I relocated to Nanango, in the Wide Bay/Burnett area, a huge “sea change” for us all!
Nanango was a temporary arrangement, and after 2 years I found my “Shangri-la”, a 45 acre property situated within the Scenic Rim, in the foothills of Mt Barney, 13 km from the village of Rathdowney.
It would appear that I have a purpose here, as I am now 'Rathdowney Alpacas' at Rathdowney.
I have always concentrated on improving my breeding herd with each generation, and although I initially began with almost every colour in the breed, my present mature females are either white or light fawn huacayas. I am always happy to discuss all alpaca matters with interested parties, and offer back-up support for new breeders.
