Animal Husbandry

Ear Tagging: A uniquely numbered brass ear tag, applied to an alpaca, registers it with the Australian Alpaca Association Ltd. Breeding
details are recorded on the IAR (International Alpaca Register).

Toenail Trimming: Alpacas have soft padded feet with two toes on
each foot around a soft leathery pad. Nails are trimmed at shearing.

Teeth Care: Only one set of teeth, on the bottom jaw, which may
occasional need filing.

Vaccinations: It is currently common practice for alpacas to be
vaccinated twice yearly using a sheep dose of 5 in 1 vaccine.

Halter Training & Leading: This is usually begun at weaning. It
requires patience and firmness, with reasonable understanding and
co-operation between handler and cria achieved after 5 or 6 short 10
to 15 minute sessions. Of course, there is always the exception!
